Registered Arts Therapist |
Psychotherapeutic services

I support adults to navigate life’s challenges by providing a compassionate space where talk therapy, creativity, and body awareness meet. I offer a trauma-informed environment, online or in person, where we work at your own pace to help you feel more grounded and connected
"Healing is not a destination, but a process of returning to yourself. It is the act of reclaiming the parts of your experience that you had to disconnect from to survive." - Dr Gabor Maté

What is Creative Arts Therapy
Creative Arts Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that integrates talk therapy with creative processes like visual arts, movement, sound, and writing. It offers a gentle way to explore and express complex feelings that are often difficult to put into words.
How it works:
By combining psychotherapeutic methods with an awareness of your physical experience, sessions are tailored to your individual needs. This holistic approach supports emotional regulation, trauma recovery, and personal growth by engaging the body as well as the mind. You may choose to use drawing, painting, movement, mindfulness, drama, or sand play to communicate your inner world at your own pace.
Professional Standards:
A Registered Arts Therapist (AThR) is a mental health professional who holds a Clinical Master’s degree in Arts Therapy. Practitioners in Aotearoa are registered with professional bodies such as ANZACATA, which ensures high ethical standards, regular clinical supervision, and evidence based practice.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens in a first session?
The first session is a gentle opportunity for us to get to know one another. We will talk about what has brought you to therapy and what you hope to gain from our time together. There is no pressure to dive straight into creative work. It is simply a space for you to share your story and see if my approach feels like the right fit for you.
How much does a session cost?
Individual sessions are 60 minutes long and the fee is $160. This includes all art materials used during our time together in the studio. If you are seeking therapy through an organization or require a different arrangement, please feel free to reach out and we can discuss your specific needs.
Where are you located?
I run my practice from a calm and private studio in Ellerslie, Auckland. The space is designed to be a quiet retreat from the busyness of daily life.
Do I need to be good at art or movement?
Not at all. Creative Arts Therapy is about the process of expression rather than the end result. You do not need any previous experience or artistic skill. The tools we use are simply different ways to explore feelings when words feel like they are not enough. We go at your pace, and you always have the choice in how you wish to engage.
How many sessions will I need?
Therapy is a highly individual process, and the number of sessions depends on your personal goals and circumstances.
Who am I
I am Dan Cunningham, a registered arts therapist (AThR), artist, and yoga teacher. I was born in South Africa and I am of Irish descent, arriving in Aotearoa from London in 2020. As Tauiwi, I am grateful to live and practice here, bringing a deep respect for the diverse stories and unique journeys of everyone I meet.
My practice weaves together the body, voice, and imagination. As an artist and yoga teacher, my early training in embodied theatre and voicework sparked a lifelong interest in how we hold our experiences physically. Today, I integrate these foundations with clinical psychotherapeutic methods and creative arts to support emotional well-being and resilience.
To support others, I prioritise my own balance through a creative practice and time in nature. The bush and the sea are my go-to spots for a reset. My daily routine includes Ashtanga yoga and meditation, alongside a long-standing interest in Ayurveda. Most importantly, I value time spent with friends and family.
